Rack Types Explained

Power Rack/Cage

Power racks and power cages are just two names for the same thing. It's the piece of equipment that makes a home gym feel like a real gym. Four steel posts, adjustable safety catches, and a pull-up bar give you everything you need to squat, press, pull, and build safely, on your own schedule, in your own space.

Half Rack

A half rack uses two uprights instead of four. It is more compact and easier to access from all sides. It still handles the key barbell movements and includes safety catches, but the open design means slightly less enclosed protection than a full cage.

Half racks are popular in Australian home gyms and garages where space is a priority but training quality can't be compromised. Some models like the HR2300 include integrated storage and an optional cable system add-on.

Squat Rack

A squat rack is a simpler, more affordable two-upright design. It's fully adjustable in both height and width, handles squats, bench press, and overhead press, and takes up significantly less floor space than a full cage. It's a standalone unit with no cable or accessory add-ons.

Squat Stand

A squat stand is two independent posts used to hold a barbell between your squat sets. It is the simplest and most space-efficient option in the rack family.

What to Check Before Buying

Before you buy, check these off to train confidently and safely:

1. Space: measure floor space & ceiling height before choosing a rack e.g. Evolve Power Rack requires 112cm (D) x 135cm (W) floor space footprint with 229cm ceiling height clearance. To ensure safety, allow at least 60cm clearance on all sides.

2. Safety features: if you are a solo trainer, look for safety spotters or straps

3. Weight capacity: check max load that suits your training in a long term

4. Attachments: plan ahead, choose racks that support the cable system or attachments you want later

5. Flooring: ensure you have rubber gym flooring to protect your floor and gym gear

6. Delivery: check if your address qualifies for Free Metro Shipping on Orders over $250

7. Warranty: know what is covered and for how long before you buy

Common Mistakes

We want to save you from the headaches. Here are the most common mistakes buyers make when building their home gym.

Spacing

The most common mistake is measuring only the rack footprint and forgetting about everything around it. A standard Olympic Barbell is usually 220cm long so be sure your home has enough space. Keep in mind the space to load and unload plates, and the room to move safely during weight lifting.

Missing attachment

Before you buy, think about what exercises you want to perform and make sure the rack you choose supports them. A cable system or lat pulldown do not come standard on most racks as they are usually add-ons.

Mismatch attachment

Not all attachments fit all racks. The Evolve Power Rack uses a 1 inch hole pattern and works with the Evolve ecosystem while the System X All-in-One Functional Trainer uses a ⅝ inch hole pattern and works with System X rack attachments. Buying the wrong attachment for your rack is frustrating. Always check compatibility before adding to cart.

Choosing a rack that does not match your future training

A lower price is always attractive until you realise the rack does not support the attachments you want. If you want cable work, you need a rack with a compatible cable system. If you plan to add accessories over time, you need a rack with an attachment ecosystem. Think about how you actually train not just the first day, but the next few years.

Skipping gym flooring

It seems like a nice-to-have until the first time a plate hits your concrete floor. Gym flooring protects your floor from damage, reduces noise, absorbs vibration, and defines your training space. It also protects your gym gear. Add it to your order at the same time.

Forgetting collars

Collars keep your plates locked onto the bar during every lift. They are an inexpensive essential that belongs in every home gym order. Do not skip them. Most Gym Plus bundles already include a pair of collars so if you are buying a package, you are covered.
